Cannabis Concentrates: From Shatter to Wax, What You Need to Know

Posted on January 5, 2024 by Dave G-Torff

Cannabis concentrates are redefining how users engage with the plant. Extracted for their potency, flavor, and efficiency, these products offer a different kind of cannabis experience—one that rewards knowledge, precision, and responsible use.

What Are Cannabis Concentrates?

Cannabis concentrates are highly potent substances derived from the cannabis plant by extracting cannabinoids and terpenes. These extracts can contain THC levels as high as 90%, offering far more intensity than traditional flower.

Concentrates come in a variety of textures and consistencies, each with its own appeal and best-use scenario. While many people appreciate concentrates for their quick onset and compact size, it’s their versatility and strength that truly set them apart.

Shatter: The Glass-Like Extract

Appearance and Texture

Shatter gets its name from its translucent, glass-like consistency. It’s typically amber in color and snaps into pieces when broken.

Extraction Method

Shatter is made through a solvent-based extraction, commonly using butane. The resulting Butane Hash Oil (BHO) is then purged of solvents under heat and vacuum pressure, producing a smooth and stable concentrate.

How to Use It

  • Dabbing is the most popular method.

  • It can also be vaporized in compatible pens.

  • Some users sprinkle shatter over flower for enhanced potency.

Wax: Soft, Malleable, and Flavorful

Texture and Appearance

Wax has a thick, oily consistency similar to softened candle wax or honeycomb. Its soft texture makes it easy to handle but also more prone to degradation if not stored properly.

How It’s Made

Like shatter, wax is often produced with butane. However, during the purging process, it’s agitated to introduce air, which gives it a fluffier, more opaque consistency.

Consumption

  • Wax is most commonly dabbed using a rig.

  • It can be added to bowls or joints, though this is less efficient.

  • Some people incorporate it into homemade edibles.

Other Types of Cannabis Concentrates

Crumble

Crumble is a drier, more crumbly version of wax. It’s easier to handle and store but offers a similar cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Rosin

Made by applying heat and pressure to flower or hash, rosin is solventless and highly valued for its purity. It’s an excellent option for health-conscious consumers.

Live Resin

Live resin is extracted from fresh, flash-frozen cannabis plants, preserving a rich terpene profile and intense flavor. It’s ideal for flavor chasers and experienced dabbers.

The Art of Dabbing

Dabbing is one of the most effective and flavorful ways to consume cannabis concentrates. It requires a specific setup:

  • Dab Rig: A water pipe designed for concentrates.

  • Nail or Banger: Heated with a torch to vaporize the concentrate.

  • Carb Cap and Dab Tool: For handling the product and maximizing vapor.

Once the nail reaches the ideal temperature, a small amount of concentrate is applied, instantly vaporizing and delivering an intense, flavorful hit.

Safety and Extraction Methods

Solvent-Based Extraction

This method uses butane, propane, or CO₂ to extract compounds. The resulting concentrates must undergo a purging process to remove all solvent residues. Reputable producers lab-test their products to confirm purity.

Solventless Extraction

Solventless methods like rosin pressing or ice water extraction avoid chemical solvents, making them a cleaner, safer option for some consumers.

Responsible Use and Potential Risks

Due to their potency, cannabis concentrates are not for everyone—especially new users. Here’s how to approach them safely:

Start Small

Always begin with a rice-grain-sized dab, even if you’re a regular flower user. The effects of concentrates can be overwhelming for the unprepared.

Monitor Your Tolerance

Frequent use can build tolerance quickly. This means you’ll need more product to achieve the same effect, which can lead to overconsumption or dependency.

Source Matters

Only buy concentrates from trusted producers who provide third-party lab results. Look for information about THC/CBD content, terpene profiles, and contaminant screenings.

The Future of Cannabis Concentrates

As the cannabis industry evolves, concentrates are becoming more refined, accessible, and diverse. Advances in extraction technology, improved quality standards, and increased consumer education are all helping to shape a more informed and safer market.

Expect to see more solventless products, customizable experiences with precise cannabinoid ratios, and a broader range of consumption methods as concentrates continue to grow in popularity.
